George Burns, born Nathan Birnbaum, was a prolific American actor, comedian, and writer whose career spanned much of the twentieth century. He became famous for his partnership with his wife Gracie Allen; together they formed a vaudeville duo that successfully moved into radio, film, and television, becoming a leading example of popular comedy for nearly two decades. After Gracie’s death, Burns maintained a steady presence in the performing arts, returning to careers in film and theater and taking on prominent roles and memorable appearances. His versatility led him to appear in classic comedies and to play characters that leaned on his public image as a perpetually good-humored man and cigar aficionado. Critical recognition culminated in the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Sunshine Boys (1975), a late-career milestone that reinforced his film legacy. Later works such as Oh, God! (1977) and Going in Style (1979) further increased his visibility with new generations. A long-career and widely popular figure, Burns left a legacy as a pioneer in the transition from vaudeville to electronic media and for an unmistakable public persona marked by dry humor and artistic longevity.
