George F. Kennan was an American diplomat, historian, and foreign-policy adviser whose work shaped U.S. conduct during the Cold War. He gained international recognition for articulating the containment doctrine in the Long Telegram and the essay “The Sources of Soviet Conduct,” which guided the Truman Doctrine and policies such as the Marshall Plan in the 1940s and 1950s.

Grounded in a realist view of international relations, Kennan argued that competition with the Soviet Union should be managed by political and economic means rather than by expansive militarization. Over time he became critical of how his ideas were applied, rejecting arms escalations and interventions such as the Vietnam War.

During his academic years at the Institute for Advanced Study, he published memoirs and analyses that influenced debates on the balance of power, diplomacy, and the limits of Wilsonian idealism. He received the Medal of Freedom in 1989 and remained a respected and critical voice on foreign policy until his final years.
