George F. McGinnis was a prominent American basketball player whose professional career spanned eleven seasons across the ABA and NBA. Emerging from Washington High School in Indianapolis and starring at Indiana University, he became known for high scoring and rebounding averages and for winning the state high school championship in 1969. In the ABA he became a cornerstone of the Indiana Pacers, helping them win back-to-back league titles (1972 and 1973) and earning individual honors such as co-MVP of the league in 1975 and the scoring title that same year.
His move to the NBA produced standout seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Denver Nuggets, including All-Star selections and First Team NBA recognition. McGinnis posted significant playoff numbers and had notable individual performances, including games of more than 40 points. Returning to the Pacers at the end of his career, he did not recover his peak form but left an institutional legacy: his number 30 was retired by the Pacers.
Regarded as one of the greats of the former ABA, McGinnis was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. He is remembered for his statistical versatility, his role in the Pacers’ championships, and his contribution to the historic transition from the ABA to the NBA.
