Georges Auric was a French composer whose work spanned concert music, ballet, theater and film. Recognized early as a prodigy, he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and the Schola Cantorum, became a protégé of Erik Satie and a central figure in the short‑lived group Les Six, associated with Jean Cocteau. In the 1920s he was notable for opposing the musical establishment, contributing to collective scores and to ballets such as Les Mariés de la tour Eiffel.
During the 1930s Auric shifted from avant‑garde experimenter to a more populist and politicized composer, aligning with left‑wing groups and adopting strategies to broaden his audience: working in collectives, writing for new media and infusing his music with political positions. That change also coincided with his entry into film scoring, which began in 1930.
As a film composer he wrote scores for French, British and American productions, achieving popular recognition for Moulin Rouge and the song "Where Is Your Heart?" In 1962 he assumed institutional roles, including the direction of the Paris Opera and the presidency of SACEM. At the same time he remained active in chamber music and music criticism, defending the ideals of Les Six and the new spirit against prevailing academicism.
