Gillian Baverstock was a British author, non-fiction writer and memoirist, best known for promoting and contextualizing the work of her mother, the children’s novelist Enid Blyton. Educated at independent schools in England and at the University of St Andrews, she began her career as a primary school teacher before turning to writing, giving lectures and taking part in radio and festival programmes about her mother.
Over her life she wrote memoirs and books aimed at young readers, and in 1999 co-founded Quill Publications Ltd. to publish the comic magazine Blue Moon, based on classic fairy tales. A public advocate for Blyton’s legacy, she intervened in debates over criticism of her mother’s work and appeared in documentaries and literary events that reappraised both the writing and the family life.
Married to BBC producer Donald Baverstock, she had four children and lived for many years in Ilkley. Her work blends personal recollection with curation of the family archive, contributing to the preservation and to the understanding of the public reception of twentieth-century British children’s literature.
