Ginger Baker (Peter Edward Baker) was an English drummer whose career helped redefine the role of percussion in rock. He became widely known as cofounder of Cream (1966–1969), alongside Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton, a group often cited as the first rock “supergroup.” His virtuosic technique, use of timpani and an expanded kit including two bass drums, and long improvised solos — notably “Toad” — influenced generations of drummers and contributed to the rise of hard rock. Before Cream, Baker gained prominence on the London R&B and jazz scene, playing with the Graham Bond Organisation and establishing a professional standard among rock drummers. In the 1970s he broadened his work: he formed Ginger Baker’s Air Force, recorded and toured with jazz and rock musicians, and spent a significant period in Nigeria, where he collaborated with Fela Kuti and helped set up a local recording studio. Throughout his career he also joined various groups and released albums under his own name, remaining relevant until the end of his life. His turbulent career included struggles with drug addiction and health problems, but his technical legacy and influence on drummers remain central to the history of modern popular music.
