Giorgio Napolitano was an Italian politician whose career spanned most of the postwar era, emerging as a central figure in public life from the mid‑20th century through the 2010s. A member of the Italian Communist Party from 1945 and later of its social‑democratic successors, Napolitano was associated with the migliorismo current, a reformist and moderate tendency that sought to modernize the communist tradition in a democratic direction. Over more than six decades he held parliamentary and executive offices, including President of the Chamber of Deputies (1992–1994) and Minister of the Interior (1996–1998). He became a lifetime senator in 2005 and in 2006 was elected President of the Republic, a post he held for eight and a half years — the first Italian head of state to be re‑elected and, at the time, the longest‑serving in the role. His tenure was marked by decisive interventions during political and financial crises, such as selecting heads of government amid parliamentary deadlock in 2011–2013, actions that drew both criticism for concentrating power and praise for stabilizing institutions and averting economic collapse. Napolitano is remembered as a pro‑European who broke historic barriers by reaching the presidency as a former communist, and for playing a prominent role in the transition from the so‑called First to the Second Italian Republic. His legacy includes consolidating political practices for crisis management and maintaining a lasting presence in institutional life until his death in 2023.
