Giosuè Carducci was an Italian poet, critic, and university professor whose work marked the shift from Romanticism to a renewed embrace of classical tradition. Educated in Pisa, he held the chair of Italian literature at the University of Bologna by the age of 25, where he taught for decades and exercised considerable intellectual influence. His poetry, initially associated with the group Amici pedanti, sought to revive old forms and models — from Dante and Petrarch to the Greco‑Roman classics — in opposition to the prevailing Romanticism. Among his main collections are Juvenilia, Levia Gravia, Rime Nuove, and Odi barbare, the last of which many consider his masterpiece. Carducci repeatedly reorganized his texts, culminating in the definitive edition of the Opere between 1889 and 1909, which systematized his poetic output by genre and period. His verses combine classical learning, humanistic concern, and celebration of the national spirit. Also prominent in public life, he accepted institutional posts and was appointed a senator in 1890. In 1906 he became the first Italian awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, a distinction that confirmed his central role in nineteenth‑century Italian culture and his legacy as a renovator of national poetry.
