Giovanni Agnelli was an Italian industrial entrepreneur, known as cofounder and principal leader of the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Fiat) from its founding in 1899. Under his direction the company grew rapidly: from the first factory with 35 employees in 1900 to mass production in the following decades, becoming one of Italy’s largest industries of the period and expanding its international activity. Agnelli took on executive roles early, becoming managing director and, in 1920, president, while also concentrating efforts to increase his shareholding. His management combined industrial investment, financial partnerships and business initiatives in sectors such as transport and textiles, including collaborations with financier Riccardo Gualino. Involved with labor and political issues, Agnelli faced industrial crises and opted for pragmatic solutions, such as productivity‑linked contracts, without resorting to violent retaliation. Politically, he moved closer to monarchist and centrist positions, advocating a modernizing and internationalist capitalism. Agnelli’s legacy remains tied to the construction of a major Italian automobile industry and to Fiat’s lasting influence on Italy’s economic and technological development in the twentieth century.
