Gladys Alberta Bentley was an American singer and pianist who rose to prominence as a figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Known for a powerful contralto voice and a bold stage presence, she became notorious for performances that blended blues, jazz and comedy, often with lyrics suggestive for the time. Her style included male attire—especially tailcoat and top hat—and shows accompanied by drag queens, which established her as an icon challenging gender norms. She began her career in New York clubs such as the Clam House and the Ubangi Club, and recorded for Okeh Records. In the late 1930s she moved to California, where she was billed as “America’s Greatest Sepia Piano Player” and continued performing and recording into the 1950s. She also toured as an attraction in cities including Cleveland, Chicago and Hollywood. Bentley’s life encompassed both artistic notoriety and controversies over her personal life: she had relationships with women, entered into civil unions, and later wrote about undergoing physical and religious changes. Her legacy endures as a historical reference at the intersection of Black music, adult entertainment and the visibility of sexual-affectional identities in the early twentieth century.
