Glenn Close is an American actress, singer and film producer. Cited as "one of the great actresses of her generation," by Vanity Fair, Close has received numerous awards throughout her career, including three Emmy Awards, three Tony Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. She has also been nominated for the Academy Award eight times, holding the record for the most nominations without a win for an actress. In 2016 she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame and, in 2019, Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
She began her professional career in theatre in 1974 with Love for Love on Broadway; her Broadway work includes the productions Barnum in 1980 and The Real Thing in 1983, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. Her film debut came in The World According to Garp (1982), followed by roles in The Big Chill (1983) and The Natural (1984); all three earning her nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her roles in Fatal Attraction (1987) and Dangerous Liaisons (1988) earned her Academy Award nominations for Best Actress.
In the 1990s she won two more Tony Awards for Death and the Maiden (1992) and Sunset Boulevard (1995). For the television film Serving in Silence (1995) she received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. In subsequent years Close starred in the films Reversal of Fortune (1990), 101 Dalmatians (1996)[8] and Air Force One (1997), among others. On television her portrayal of Eleanor of Aquitaine in Barbarians & Traitors (2003) earned her a Golden Globe Award. From 2007 to 2012 she portrayed Patty Hewes in the drama series Damages, winning a Golden Globe Award and two Primetime Emmy Awards. She returned to the Broadway stage in a 2014 revival of A Delicate Balance. During this period, she received two Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for Albert Nobbs (2011) and The Wife (2017), winning a third Golden Globe Award for the latter.
