Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was a German poet, playwright, philosopher and art critic, a central figure of the Enlightenment and regarded as a founder of modern German literature. His output included stage plays, aesthetic essays and theological treatises in which he defended free thought, religious tolerance and opposed antisemitism. As a theatre critic he broke with neoclassical formalism and challenged the dominance of French theatre in Germany; his collected critiques in the Hamburgische Dramaturgie paved the way for a more realistic social drama. Plays such as Miss Sara Sampson, Minna von Barnhelm, Emilia Galotti and Nathan the Wise introduced bourgeois characters into tragic roles and examined moral and psychological conflicts with a pronounced ethical emphasis. Beyond the theatre, he wrote influential works on aesthetics—most notably Laokoon—where he drew boundaries between painting and poetry. He also served as librarian to the Duke of Brunswick, a position that gave him stability to support his family and continue his literary and religious inquiries. His legacy lies in modernizing German drama and in his steady advocacy of reason, criticism and tolerance.
