Graham Hancock is a British author and former journalist known for books that propose alternative theories about the origins of ancient civilizations. He has published a series of works — including Fingerprints of the Gods and Magicians of the Gods — in which he argues for a highly developed “mother culture” that influenced Egypt, Mesopotamia and Mesoamerican societies. His writings combine research in archaeology, geology and astronomy with unconventional interpretations of ancient evidence.

His hypotheses, which include dating landmarks such as the Sphinx to periods far earlier than those accepted by mainstream Egyptology, have provoked wide debate. Geologists such as Robert M. Schoch have pointed to signs of weathering compatible with older dates, but this view is disputed by the majority of Egyptologists, who retain the conventional chronology for the pyramids and the Sphinx.

Hancock worked as a journalist for publications such as The Times, The Independent and The Economist before focusing primarily on writing books and appearing in documentaries and lectures. His work has reached a large popular audience, attracting both followers interested in alternative theories and sharp criticism from the academic community, and is often classified as pseudohistory or pseudoarchaeology.
