Natalia Alexeievna, born Princess Wilhelmina Louisa of Hesse‑Darmstadt (1755–1776), became czarevna by marrying Paul Petrovich, the future Emperor Paul I. From a German princely family, she was chosen by Catherine II as a suitable bride for her son, noted for her education, intellectual vivacity, and noble manners, although diplomatic reports mentioned a certain coldness of character and ambition. Converted to Orthodoxy and brought into the Russian court in 1773, the new czarevna initially enjoyed the empress’s approval, but her relationship with her mother‑in‑law deteriorated: criticism of her temperament, handling of finances, and refusal to master Russian created tensions. In addition, rumors about her closeness to figures such as Andrei Razumovsky fueled political mistrust at court. Natalia’s death in 1776, after a difficult childbirth of a stillborn son, was followed by controversy and rumors about possible interventions, although the autopsy indicated congenital scoliosis. Her death had both personal and political effects on Paul, accentuating traits of reserve and distrust that marked his later behavior and influenced the dynastic succession.
