Luisa Maria Amalia Teresa of Naples and Sicily was a Neapolitan and Sicilian princess who served as Grand Duchess consort of Tuscany from 1790 to 1801 through her marriage to Archduke Ferdinand (the future Ferdinand III). A granddaughter of monarchs such as Charles III of Spain and Francis I of the Holy Roman Empire, she belonged to the dynastic network that linked the Bourbon rulers of southern Italy to the Austrian royal houses. Her marriage, celebrated in Florence in 1790, placed her at the political and courtly center of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Napoleon’s rise and the Treaty of Aranjuez in 1801 ended her husband’s rule and forced the couple into exile in Vienna, reflecting the sweeping territorial and dynastic changes across Europe at the turn of the nineteenth century. Luisa bore several children, among them Leopold II, who later returned to the Tuscan throne. She died in Vienna in 1802 during the childbirth of a stillborn son and was buried in the imperial crypt. Her life and fate illustrate the dynastic alliances and political vicissitudes that affected Europe’s ruling houses in the Napoleonic era.
