Grand Duke Constantine Constantinovich Romanov was a Grand Duke of Russia, a member of the imperial family, and a notable figure in Russian letters and the arts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A son of Grand Duke Constantine Nikolaevich, he devoted himself to poetry, theater, and translation—signing his works “KR”—and translated plays by Goethe, Schiller, and Shakespeare, including a prominent version of Hamlet. As a patron he led the Russian Musical Society, maintained relations with composers such as Tchaikovsky, and presided over cultural and educational institutions supported by the emperor. Militarily attached at first to the Navy and later to the Imperial Guard, Constantine combined these duties with intensive literary and theatrical activity, even staging and performing roles in his own plays. He married Princess Elisabeth of Saxe‑Altenburg, with whom he had nine children; the family lived in the Pavlovsk Palace and observed new dynastic rules that limited the use of the title Grand Duke. In private, his diaries reveal an intimate conflict among Orthodox faith, family duty, and his homosexuality—a subject kept secret in his lifetime and revealed only posthumously. Known for his social conservatism and patronage, he left a legacy as an author, translator, and promoter of the Russian arts.
