Anna Mary Robertson Moses, known worldwide as Grandma Moses, was an American folk artist whose late success became emblematic: she began painting intensively at age 78 and gained wide popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. Her works portray rural life with plain realism, bright colors and a strong nostalgic tone, depicting seasonal scenes, festivals and daily routines of the countryside that resonated with the public’s collective memory. Before dedicating herself to painting, she worked as a housekeeper and spent much of her life in a rural setting, an experience that grounded her imagery. She also produced embroidery and handicrafts; her career illustrates the shift from domestic work to institutionally recognized artistic production. She became a media figure: Time cover in 1953, subject of documentaries and author of an autobiography.
