Greg Louganis is one of the United States’ most celebrated Olympic divers, known for winning gold in both the 3 m springboard and 10 m platform at the 1984 and 1988 Games — making him the only man to win both events at consecutive Olympics. His competitive career includes world titles, the first unanimous perfect 10 in a major competition, and recognition as one of the greatest divers in history. Trained in theatre and with a background in dance and gymnastics since childhood, Louganis attracted attention early, joining collegiate teams and earning the notice of prominent coaches. He was already an Olympic medalist in 1976 and, although prevented from competing in Moscow 1980 by the boycott, he was later honored with the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to athletes affected by that boycott. Beyond his athletic achievements, his public life took on social and cultural significance: in 1988 he suffered a head injury during the preliminaries and, years later, revealed he was HIV‑positive — a disclosure that sparked debate about public health and stigma, with no evidence of transmission in that incident. After retiring from competition he worked as a coach, mentored Olympic squads, and took part in artistic and television projects, leaving an impact both within the sport and as a public figure for LGBTQ+ athletes.
