Gustav Ludwig Hertz was a German experimental physicist whose career spanned fundamental research, teaching and industrial work. He became internationally known alongside James Franck for the experiment that demonstrated the laws of inelastic collisions between electrons and atoms, work that earned them the 1925 Nobel Prize in Physics. Trained in Göttingen, Munich and Berlin, Hertz early on worked in atomic physics, gas discharges and spectroscopy.
During the 1920s and 1930s he held leadership positions in university and industrial institutes — including at Philips and the Technische Hochschule Berlin — and contributed to gas‑diffusion techniques for isotopic separation. His professional life was affected by the racial laws of the Nazi regime, which forced him to leave his chair in Berlin in 1934; he was later involved in several applied research programs during and after World War II.
After the war he took part in scientific projects in the Soviet Union, where he led an institute devoted to isotope separation and received local recognition for his work. He returned to East Germany, where he headed the physics department at the University of Leipzig and presided over the East German Physical Society. His legacy combines fundamental experimental advances on electron–atom interaction with a significant influence on twentieth‑century institutions and applied physics techniques.
