Gwen Plumb was an Australian actress and comedian whose lengthy, distinguished career often earned her the title “Grand Dame” of the country’s entertainment. Active for more than six decades, she worked across nearly every branch of show business — theatre, radio, television, revues, pantomime, vaudeville, presenting and scriptwriting — and was recognized for her versatility and public presence. On radio she established herself as a producer, writer and presenter, hosting a long-running program on the Macquarie Radio Network from 1945 to 1974 and appearing in landmark serials such as The Lawsons and Blue Hills. On television she became widely known for memorable roles in soap operas and miniseries; among her best-known parts were Ada Simmonds in The Young Doctors and May “Mum” Foote in Richmond Hill, and she also appeared in productions including The Harp in the South, Poor Man’s Orange and Neighbours. The author of memoirs and even a cookbook tied to one of her characters, Plumb was also notable for her community work. She received the British Empire Medal in 1973 and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993, honours that recognize her contribution to Australian culture and society.
