Henry Steel Olcott was a lawyer, journalist, and a central figure in the Theosophical movement in the late 19th century. Co-founder of the Theosophical Society in 1875 alongside Helena Blavatsky, he served as its first president and devoted much of his life to promoting esoteric ideas and the comparative study of religious traditions. Before committing to theosophy, he worked as an editor at the New York Tribune and served in the Army during the Civil War, reaching the rank of colonel. His intellectual work included publications on varied subjects, from agronomy to spirituality, reflecting a path that brought him into the spiritualist movement and later toward Buddhism. Settled in India from 1878, Olcott played an active role in promoting the Buddhist revival in Sri Lanka: he helped establish educational institutions such as Ananda College and Nalanda College, contributed to the development of Buddhist symbols, and remained in Adyar while the society kept its headquarters there. His public memory in Sri Lanka is marked by streets, schools, and statues bearing his name. Among his works are treatises on theosophy and Buddhism, such as A Buddhist Catechism and Theosophy, Religion, and Occult Science, which influenced both esoteric movements in the West and dialogue among religious traditions.
