Hans Bender was a German psychologist and parapsychologist known for becoming a central figure in the study of unusual human experiences in the postwar period. Founder of the Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene in Freiburg, he devoted himself to investigating cases of poltergeists, clairvoyance and other psi manifestations, notable for his public engagement and media presence associated with his characteristic persona. Trained in psychology with a strong influence from depth psychology—especially Pierre Janet and Carl Gustav Jung—Bender adopted qualitative approaches and an “animistic” explanation for paranormal phenomena, viewing them as expressions of psychic tensions in the individuals affected rather than as spiritual interventions. He also coined the concept of the “uniformity of the occult” to point to similarities in paranormal reports across eras and cultures. His career was marked by famous cases, such as the Rosenheim Poltergeist, and by controversies: criticisms of investigative procedures and episodes of manipulation in research that undermined part of his credibility. Even so, Bender left a lasting legacy in the institutionalization of parapsychology in Germany and in academic debate about the boundaries between clinical psychology and extraordinary phenomena.
