Harold Wertz was an American child actor remembered for his brief role in the Our Gang comedy series, where he played a character nicknamed Bouncy in three 1932 shorts: Choo-Choo!, The Pooch and Hook and Ladder. He entered show business through a local contest to replace the previous performer of the “fat boy”; although he did not win the initial selection, he was hired at the end of 1931 for the subsequent films. Wertz’s film career was short; the temporary suspension of productions after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake and contractual clauses led to his contract not being renewed, despite occasional loans to other studios. He later left acting and pursued other occupations in adult life. During World War II he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine aboard the ship Mills Victory, and was among the first American ships to reach Tokyo after the armistice. After the war he settled in Long Beach, married, worked in the steel pipe trade and earned a private pilot’s license, remaining in that line of work until retirement.
