Hartley Coleridge was an English poet, biographer, essayist and teacher, best known as the eldest son of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. A graduate of Merton College, Oxford, his academic career combined literary talent with personal difficulties that prevented him from securing a stable university position. He worked as a contributor to periodicals such as the London Magazine and Blackwood’s Magazine, where he published poems and essays that drew on his Romantic family heritage while expressing an introspective personal voice. Among his editorial projects are regional biographies and compilations such as Biographia Borealis and Worthies of Yorkshire and Lancashire, produced under a contract with a Leeds publisher that also enabled a collected edition of his poems. As a teacher he worked at schools in Ambleside and, for short periods, at Sedbergh, although teaching did not become his lasting vocation. Hartley’s life was shaped by close association with Romantic figures—Wordsworth, Southey and the Lake District literary circle—and by struggles with alcoholism that limited his achievements. He lived for long periods in Grasmere and Rydal, where he was known locally as a man of letters and a solitary walker; his legacy lies in modest but notable contributions to biographical literature and the essay of his time.
