Hedwig Pringsheim (Gertrud Hedwig Anna Dohm) was an actress and a central figure in the German cultural elite of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trained at the Meiningen Court Theatre, she was noted for classical roles — including Louise in Intrigue and Love and Jessica in The Merchant of Venice — and took part in the company’s European tours, building both artistic and social reputation. Born into a family engaged in journalism and activism — her mother was a prominent feminist — Pringsheim turned her home in Munich into a hub for intellectual gatherings, receiving artists, scientists and politicians. She married the mathematician and patron Alfred Pringsheim, with whom she had five children; their daughter Katia married the writer Thomas Mann, a connection that increased the family’s public visibility. Her personal life was also affected by the political pressures of the era: classified as non‑Aryan by the Nazi regime, she was forced into exile in Switzerland in 1939 and had family assets seized. She died in Zurich in 1942, leaving a legacy connected to German theatre, bourgeois cultural life, and the intersections of art, science and literature in her time.
