Heide Ecker‑Rosendahl (born Heidemarie Rosendahl) is a German athlete prominent in the 1960s and 1970s, noted for her versatility across long jump, pentathlon and sprint events. She emerged on the international scene as early as 1966 with a pentathlon silver at the European Championships, and strengthened her reputation by setting the long jump world record of 6.84 m in 1970.
The high point of her career came at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, where she won two gold medals: the long jump (6.78 m) and the 4×100 m relay, and also produced a briefly record-setting performance in the pentathlon during the competition. Those achievements made her one of West Germany’s most popular athletes at the time; she was voted Sportswoman of the Year in 1970 and 1972.
Her career reflects the strong European tradition in women’s athletics in that era and her ability to compete at a high technical level across multiple events. Rosendahl’s legacy is linked to the uncommon combination of power, speed and technique that ranked her among the leading sprinters and jumpers of her generation.
