Heinrich Friedrich Ernst Blücher was a German poet and philosopher whose intellectual life was intertwined with the major debates of the twentieth century. A militant in the communist movement, he participated in 1928 in the foundation of the current known as the Communist Party of Germany – Opposition (KPD-O). With the rise of Nazism he went into exile: first in Paris and, from 1941, in the United States.
Self-taught, Blücher did not leave a body of work published as books or essays, but he became an influential presence in academic and cultural circles, especially in New York. In 1952 he began a teaching career at Bard College, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1968.
His personal and intellectual relationship with Hannah Arendt, of whom he was the second husband, was marked by mutual influence: his ideas contributed to the development of some central themes in her work, to which she dedicated The Origins of Totalitarianism. Blücher died in 1970 of a heart attack.
