Henri Jean Paul was the head of security at the Hôtel Ritz in Paris. On the night of 30–31 August 1997, while driving a Mercedes S280 with Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Al‑Fayed as passengers, Paul lost control of the vehicle in the Place de l’Alma tunnel, in a crash that caused Paul and Dodi to die immediately and inflicted fatal injuries on Diana.
Subsequent French investigations found that Paul was driving at high speed and had a high blood-alcohol level, as well as traces of prescribed medications that may have impaired his driving. Expert reports concluded that the combination of intoxication and drug use was a determining factor in the loss of control of the car.
The incident drew extensive international attention because of Diana’s death and prompted debates about press pursuit, the safety of public figures, and the responsibilities of third parties involved. The case led to inquiries and reviews of safety practices and journalistic coverage in high-risk situations.
Henri Paul has since been historically associated with the Alma tunnel crash, remaining a central figure in the investigations that established the circumstances and responsibilities surrounding the accident.
