Henriette Hardenberg, born Margarete Rosenberg, was a German‑Jewish poet associated with the Expressionist movement and one of the few women in that literary circle. In Berlin and Munich she was part of the network around the magazine Die Aktion and mixed with figures such as Else Lasker‑Schüler and Rainer Maria Rilke, influences that shaped her intellectual and aesthetic development. Although she published few volumes in her lifetime, her work focuses on the body—particularly the skin—as the borderline surface between self and world. Metaphors of movement and dance, reflecting her studies at the Dalcroze school, recur in her poems, which address the desire to transcend bodily boundaries. Also active as an actress, model and private secretary for art studies, Hardenberg’s career was interrupted by exile: she fled to London in 1937 and became a British citizen in 1948. She published the collection Neigungen and left a second book, Südliches Herz, published posthumously; recent reassessments place her work among the most significant of German Expressionism.
