Henry Robertson Bowers was a Scottish explorer who joined the Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913) led by Robert Falcon Scott. Lacking prior polar experience, he became known for his discipline, notable organizational skill, and memory—qualities that made him responsible for landing operations, depot-laying, navigation, and rationing during the land phase of the expedition. In 1911 he took part in the brutal journey to the emperor penguin breeding grounds at Cape Crozier, later called The Worst Journey in the World, where, together with Edward Wilson and Apsley Cherry‑Garrard, he endured extreme temperatures to collect eggs for scientific study. His efficiency and practical ability won Scott’s confidence, and he was selected for the polar party in January 1912. Bowers made the observations that confirmed the party’s position at the South Pole and took many of the well‑known photographs near Amundsen’s camp. On the return journey he faced the progressive loss of team members, severe weather, and dwindling supplies; Bowers died alongside Scott and Wilson in late March 1912 during the expedition’s withdrawal. His legacy is associated with the professionalism, courage, and scientific rigor he showed in logistical and navigational tasks, and with the collective memory of the heroic explorations of the early twentieth century.
