Nikolaus Friedrich Wilhelm was the heir to the former Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and head of the House of Oldenburg from 1931. Born into the reigning family, he served in the Prussian army during the First World War and held the honorary rank of captain; after the fall of the German monarchies he continued to use the title nominally. Throughout the Weimar Republic and the Nazi period, Nikolaus was active in regional politics: he founded and led a Monarchist Party in the state of Oldenburg that attracted a large portion of the local population. He opposed Nazism and sought to dissuade voters from supporting it, a stance that drew mistrust from Nazi authorities and exposed him to the risk of repression. During the Second World War he lived in relative isolation at Rastede Castle. After the war he tried, without success, to negotiate with Allied authorities on behalf of a possible monarchical restoration in the former German states and remained politically active at the local level until 1963, when he passed party leadership to his son. He is remembered as a central figure in sustaining the dynasty and defending regional monarchism in the twentieth century.
