Herman Kahn was a military strategist and influential Cold War theorist associated with the RAND Corporation and founder of the Hudson Institute. Trained as a physicist, Kahn applied game theory and systems analysis to nuclear strategy, seeking rational responses to extreme scenarios — what he called “thinking the unthinkable.”
His best‑known work, On Thermonuclear War, controversially discussed how to prevent a nuclear war and, if prevention failed, how to win or survive one. Those ideas shaped debates about deterrence and contributed to the consolidation of the concept of mutually assured destruction (MAD), while also drawing intense criticism.
Beyond technical work on strategy, Kahn engaged in large practical projects, such as proposals for river integration engineering in the Amazon, which brought him public notoriety in Brazil. His figure also influenced cultural depictions of the strategic mindset of the era and has been cited as inspiration for works critical of nuclear logic.
Kahn left a lasting legacy in security studies: his quantitative analyses and hypothetical scenarios helped shape policy and the debate over risk, control, and stability in the nuclear age.
