Hermann Julius Oberth was a physicist and pioneer of astronautics, recognized among the leading forerunners of spaceflight alongside Tsiolkovsky and Goddard. Born in Transylvania, he became known early for conceiving multistage rockets and for envisioning space stations, ideas he published in influential works such as Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen (1923) and Wege zur Raumschiffahrt (1929). Despite facing academic discredit and financial hardship in the 1920s and 1930s, Oberth continued his scientific work: he taught, conducted experiments with liquid‑fuel engines, and advised on cultural projects such as the film Frau im Mond, helping to popularize space exploration. He also worked with young engineers, among them Wernher von Braun. During World War II he was involved in rocket programs in Germany and later served as a consultant in Switzerland and Italy. In later publications he addressed subjects such as space stations, orbital telescopes and space suits, and he became a public voice on ufology, defending an extraterrestrial hypothesis for some reports of unidentified flying objects. Oberth’s legacy lies in the theoretical formulation and dissemination of the foundations of modern astronautics, which influenced generations of engineers and the development of space technologies.
