Herminie Cadolle, born Eugénie Sardon, was a seamstress, businesswoman, and inventor connected to the early women's struggles of the 19th century. A participant in the Paris Commune, she joined women's relief and solidarity committees and maintained ties with figures such as Louise Michel, also working on committees that supported deportees and in the local socialist movement. After going into exile in Argentina, she opened a lingerie shop in Buenos Aires where she experimented with ways to free the female body from the constricting traditional corset. By splitting the corset into two pieces, adding shoulder straps and reinforcements, she developed a “corselet-gorge” that evolved into what is recognized as the first modern brassiere. This technical solution, refined with elastic materials after her return to France, became notable for its greater comfort. Back in Paris, she showed her creations at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, patented a design in 1898, and won medals at the 1900 exposition and at a medical-hygiene exhibition. In 1910 she founded Maison Cadolle, a family lingerie business that employed hundreds of women and continued into subsequent generations, leaving a mark on intimate apparel and on women's emancipation.
