Hjalmar Schacht was a prominent German economist and banker in the 1920s–1940s, known for his central role in stabilizing the German currency after hyperinflation and for leading the Reichsbank. As a coauthor of monetary measures such as the introduction of the Rentenmark in 1923, he helped restore financial confidence in the Weimar Republic and took part in international negotiations over war reparations, including involvement with the Young Plan. During the 1930s he moved in circles that facilitated the rise to power of the NSDAP-led government and held senior posts in the regime: president of the Reichsbank (1933–1939) and later minister of Economics (1934–1937). He is remembered for his role in the country’s early economic recovery, though he clashed with Nazi leadership over aspects of rearmament and economic policy. After World War II he was tried at Nuremberg and acquitted; he also faced denazification proceedings that led to a conviction later overturned on appeal. His career combines technical achievements in monetary policy with political and ethical controversies tied to the context of Hitler’s regime.
