Ida Straus (Rosalie Ida Blün) was a public figure remembered chiefly for her role alongside her husband, German‑American businessman Isidor Straus, co‑owner of the large Macy’s store in New York. As the wife and mother in an influential family, her name moved between domestic life and the philanthropic and business circles associated with the Strauses, whose social and economic activity marked the American Jewish community at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century. The decisive episode of her notoriety occurred in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in April 1912. Witnesses reported that, already on deck during the evacuation, Ida refused to leave her husband; the couple were last seen holding hands, refusing to board a lifeboat separately. The act was widely publicized as a gesture of marital loyalty. The story of Ida and Isidor Straus became the subject of memoirs, songs and artistic portrayals, feeding narratives of sacrifice and fidelity. In New York there are memorials and plaques honoring the couple, and a cenotaph in Woodlawn Cemetery that preserves their public memory.
