Imelda Remedios Visitación Romualdez Marcos is a central figure in twentieth-century Philippine politics, known both for her public role and her extravagant lifestyle. First Lady from 1965 to 1986, she performed executive and representative functions: she served as governor of the Metro Manila region, Minister of Human Settlements, a member of the interim assembly, and Extraordinary Ambassador. Her public role and frequent presence at official events helped establish her political influence during the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos.
The Marcos family amassed significant power and wealth amid economic crises and social unrest, provoking widespread controversy. Imelda became a symbol of that opulence—her extensive collection of shoes and jewelry fueled criticism over public spending and social inequality. The People Power Revolution of 1986 overthrew the regime; the couple went into exile and returned to the Philippines in the 1990s, when Imelda resumed parliamentary activity and was elected to successive terms as a congresswoman.
Over the decades she faced legal proceedings related to corruption and concealment of assets; in 2018 she was convicted of crimes connected to private foundations. Regardless of the controversies, her legacy remains a notable chapter in Philippine political history, combining institutional prominence, scandal, and a persistent public presence.
