Iris Murdoch was a writer and philosopher born in Ireland, known for novels that examine good and evil, sexual relationships, morality, and the power of the unconscious. Her debut, Under the Net (1954), established her as an original voice in postwar English fiction; The Sea, The Sea (1978) earned her the Booker Prize. Over her career she published more than twenty novels, including The Black Prince, The Nice and the Good and The Philosopher's Pupil, as well as notable philosophical essays.
As a philosopher, Murdoch made a mark with The Sovereignty of Good (1970), in which she shifts moral focus from the will to attention and phenomenological experience, influencing later debates in ethics. She taught at Oxford and participated in the British intellectual scene of the twentieth century, while also producing criticism and essays on contemporary authors.
Official recognitions include her appointment as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and several academic honors. Her work remains studied in both literature and moral philosophy and is regarded by scholars as having had a transformative impact on how action, perception, and ethical sensibility are conceived.
