Isabella Romola de' Medici was a sixteenth-century Tuscan noblewoman, the daughter of Cosimo I de' Medici, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Eleanor of Toledo. Raised in the palaces of Florence, she was part of her family's dynastic alliance network from an early age: betrothed at seven, she married at sixteen to Paolo Giordano Orsini, Lord (later Duke) of Bracciano, becoming the first duchess consort of that house. Her personal life reflected the political and social tensions of the Medici court. Described as having a frank and determined character, she lived in a turbulent marriage and engaged in forbidden extramarital relationships—most notably with Troilo Orsini—which heightened familial and honor-related conflicts. Her family’s prominent position initially afforded her protection and prestige, until the death of Cosimo I and the accession of her brother Francesco I. Isabella’s death, in Cerreto Guidi in 1576, was violent and surrounded by conflicting accounts: contemporary and later reports point to a homicide committed by Paolo Giordano, a case that generated rumors of complicity by family members and fed debates about power, honor, and impunity in Renaissance Italy. Her story inspired writers and remained an emblematic example of the palace dynamics of the period.
