Isidor Isaac Rabi was an American physicist of Polish origin, best known for developing nuclear magnetic resonance techniques that made it possible to measure the magnetic moment and spin of atomic nuclei. His pioneering work in this field earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1944 and laid fundamental groundwork for both nuclear physics and chemistry and for the later development of magnetic resonance in medicine. Trained and a professor at Columbia University, Rabi collaborated with several prominent researchers, formulated the Breit–Rabi equation, and advanced experimental atomic physics through the molecular beam method. During World War II he worked on radar projects at MIT’s Radiation Laboratory and took part in the Manhattan Project, engaging in the application of science to national defense. In the postwar period he held significant institutional roles: he chaired the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission, advised the U.S. government on scientific matters, and helped establish laboratories and international research organizations. He remained involved in teaching and scientific outreach until his retirement, leaving a legacy of academic and institutional influence on twentieth-century science.
