Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud was a Dutch architect whose career was established through his involvement with the De Stijl movement. Initially influenced by figures such as Berlage and by studies in Munich with Theodor Fischer, he rose to prominence through collaboration with Theo van Doesburg and early participation in the European modernist debate. As Municipal Housing Architect in Rotterdam (1918–1933), he devoted himself to social projects aimed at workers’ housing — including notable estates in Spangen, Kiefhoek and Tuschendijken — seeking to reconcile rational techniques and cost-efficiency with the psychological needs of residents, a stance he called “poetic functionalism”. A participant in the 1927 Weissenhof exhibition, Oud achieved international recognition in the 1920s and ’30s, often mentioned alongside figures such as Mies van der Rohe, Gropius and Le Corbusier. After World War II his work moved toward a more individualistic stance, no longer under De Stijl’s initial influence, and included public projects such as the National Monument in Amsterdam and the Shell building in The Hague. His legacy lies in an effort to combine constructive modernity with social responsibility, leaving a body of housing, public buildings and monuments that shaped social and modern architecture in the Netherlands.
