Jack Kramer was a prominent American tennis player in the 1940s and 1950s who also became an influential promoter of the sport. As a player he became known for his serve-and-volley game, winning three Grand Slam titles — the U.S. Championships in 1946 and 1947 and Wimbledon in 1947 — and captaining the United States in the Davis Cup finals of 1946 and 1947. Among his professional titles were the U.S. Pro (Forest Hills, 1948) and the Wembley Pro (1949), and he headlined numerous exhibition tours that established him as one of the era’s best.
Kramer was widely regarded as world No. 1 in various rankings between 1946 and 1953, a period in which he moved from amateur status to the professional circuit. After his playing career he made his mark organizing and promoting professional tours, signing contracts with top players and helping to build the paid circuit. His behind-the-scenes work was decisive in the transition that led to the Open Era of men’s tennis.
Kramer’s legacy and influence lie both in his competitive excellence and in modernizing the sport: he not only set a technical standard with the serve-and-volley, but also helped make tennis a viable profession for elite players.
