Jackie Ormes was an American cartoonist and artist, recognized as the first Black woman to produce a comic strip with national syndication. She worked primarily from the 1930s to the 1950s, creating memorable characters such as Torchy Brown and the panel Patty‑Jo ’n’ Ginger, which featured confident, independent, and politically aware Black women — a break with the dominant media stereotypes of the time. Her journalism career began at the Pittsburgh Courier, where she moved between proofreading, reporting, and illustration; she later settled in Chicago and also contributed to the Chicago Defender. Ormes used the language of comics to address contemporary social and political issues — migration, racism, environmental pollution, and women’s roles — and to project an aesthetic of Black fashion and elegance, including through toys such as the Patty‑Jo doll. Beyond her strips, she produced work in fashion and painting and took part in community projects, including contributing to the creation of the DuSable Museum of African American History. Ormes’s work left a cultural legacy by offering complex, aspirational representations of Black women, influencing later generations of artists and readers.
