Jacobus Henricus van ’t Hoff was a Dutch chemist whose work established the foundations of modern physical chemistry. A pioneer in stereochemistry, he proposed in 1874 the tetrahedral structure of carbon to explain the optical activity of organic compounds—then a revolutionary and initially contested idea—and published these theses in La chimie dans l’espace.
Over the following decade he consolidated fundamental contributions to chemical kinetics and equilibrium, introducing graphical methods to determine reaction orders and applying thermodynamic principles to equilibria. He also demonstrated analogies between the behavior of dilute solutions and gases, work that brought him international recognition.
Co‑founder, with Wilhelm Ostwald, of the journal Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie, van ’t Hoff further developed physical justifications for the Arrhenius equation and carried out applied studies, such as the investigation of salt deposits in Staßfurt, which had industrial impact in Prussia.
Awarded the first Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1901), he received numerous academic honors and honorary doctorates. His legacy endures in solution theory and the molecular theory of chemistry, central foundations of contemporary physical chemistry.
