Jan-Carl Raspe was a member of the Red Army Faction (RAF), the far-left organization also known as the Baader–Meinhof Group. Of Austrian origin, he joined Berlin countercultural circles and cooperatives in the late 1960s before, in 1970, joining Andreas Baader and Gudrun Ensslin in building the RAF. Between 1970 and 1972 he took part in violent actions attributed to the group, including bombings, robberies and murders, which led to his arrest on 1 June 1972. Sentenced on 28 April 1977 to life imprisonment for multiple crimes, he spent nearly five years in solitary confinement at Stammheim Prison in Stuttgart. His death on the so-called “Death Night” on 18 October 1977, alongside other RAF leaders, became the subject of intense public and political controversy in Germany, raising questions about the circumstances and criticism of prison administration. The episode marked the end of the period known as the German Autumn and remains a sensitive point in the country’s memory.
