Jan Kerouac (Janet Michelle Kerouac) was an American writer known for her family connection to the Beat Generation and for works of a semi-autobiographical nature. The daughter of Jack Kerouac, she had a childhood marked by poverty and by drug-related experiences, themes that would inform both her writing and her personal life. Early in her literary career, Jan published Baby Driver (1981), an intimate account of addiction and instability, followed by Trainsong (1988). She also worked on Parrot Fever, published posthumously in 2000, and maintained correspondence and ties with central figures of the Beat scene, such as Allen Ginsberg. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s she took part in conferences and events about the Beat Generation, representing her father’s memory and legacy and offering a personal perspective on that cultural milieu. Her life was also marked by legal disputes over Jack Kerouac’s estate, whose testamentary validity was contested. Jan Kerouac died in 1996; her work and biographical papers have since prompted posthumous efforts by biographers and editors to preserve and organize her manuscripts and memoirs.
