Jan Verkade (Johannes Sixtus Gerhardus Verkade) was a Dutch post-Impressionist and Symbolist-Christian painter associated with the Nabis circle and a pupil of Paul Gauguin. His work moved between a search for a modern visual language and a deep religious experience: influenced by Sérusier and Gauguin’s theories, he produced still lifes and paintings in which aesthetic concerns are intertwined with a spiritual reading of creation. Born to an Anabaptist family, Verkade broke with family expectations and, after an intense Parisian period among Symbolists, converted to Catholicism. This religious turn culminated in his entry as a Benedictine friar, when he took the name Willibrord, and in works produced within the monastery, notably in dialogue with the Beuron Art School and Desiderius Lenz. He worked across several European countries and played a significant role in shaping a renewed Benedictine art, integrating liturgical tradition with modern symbolic principles. His legacy lies at the intersection of spiritual renewal and pictorial experimentation, influencing currents in twentieth-century sacred art.
