Jason Robards Jr. was an American actor whose career established him as a defining interpreter of Eugene O’Neill’s plays and as a prominent figure in twentieth-century theatre, film, and television. Known for his dramatic intensity and versatility, he won major awards — including two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, a Tony, and an Emmy — placing him among the few to achieve the Acting Triple Crown. A World War II veteran and survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Robards served in the Navy and received the Navy Cross. After the war he completed his dramatic training and began a career that spanned four decades and roughly 170 films, with notable roles in titles such as Long Day’s Journey Into Night, All the President’s Men, and Julia. His personal life included four marriages — among them to actress Lauren Bacall — and publicly known struggles with alcoholism, which he later overcame and about which he campaigned to raise awareness. A serious car accident in 1972 required facial reconstruction but did not interrupt his professional work. Robards left a legacy recognized by critics and the industry: beyond awards and tributes, he is remembered for the intensity of his performances, his contribution to American theatre, and for roles that became benchmarks in staging classic works and in contemporary cinema.
