Jean Auel is an American novelist best known for the prehistoric fiction series Les Enfants de la Terre (The Earth’s Children), which depicts the lives of Cro-Magnon peoples and their interactions with Neanderthals. Her work, begun with The Clan of the Cave Bear (published in 1980), blends multidisciplinary research — paleontology, speleology, climatology and ethnobotany — with detailed accounts of survival techniques, tools and daily practices of the Pleistocene. The books have sold more than 45 million copies worldwide and became a popular reference for imaginings of life during the Ice Age.
Before committing to full-time writing, Auel worked in the technology industry and earned a master’s degree in management. Her shift into fiction was accompanied by extensive hands-on research: Arctic survival courses, workshops on plant identification and contact with prehistoric specialists. Those experiences supported the ethnographic realism and material reconstructions found in the saga.
Central themes of her fiction include the human condition, solidarity within groups and cultural evolution, explored through characters such as Ayla, whose journey crosses conflicts between distinct groups. The series was produced over several decades, with the most recent volume published in 2011, and has left a lasting mark on popular literature devoted to prehistory.
