Jean Borotra was one of France’s leading tennis players in the 1920s and 1930s, known by the nickname “le Basque bondissant.” As a member of the famed “Four Musketeers,” he played a key role in France’s Davis Cup victories from 1927 to 1932 and won titles at all the major tournaments of his era, including Wimbledon, Roland‑Garros and the Australian Championships. In total he claimed 21 Grand Slam titles across singles, doubles and mixed doubles, including four singles crowns.
Beyond his on‑court career, Borotra held public office: a member of the French Social Party, he served as Commissioner General for General Education and Sports in the Vichy government from 1940 to 1942. He later attempted to flee to North Africa, was captured by the Gestapo and interned in a concentration camp until his release at the end of the war in 1945.
His sporting achievements were honored with induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1976, and a fair‑play award established in 1998 bears his name. Borotra left a legacy both for competitive excellence and for the popular image he helped give French tennis in the twentieth century.
